ROOF Executive Director Sheryl Soukup presented at two different sessions at the 32nd Annual Affordable Housing Conference in Orlando last month. More than 900 people attended the statewide housing conference.

Many affordable housing issues were addressed during the two-and-a-half-day conference including everything from Faith-based Grassroots Advocacy for Housing, Regulatory Reform Update from 2019 Legislative Session, to case studies from various counties. Sheryl served as a panelist for the “Building Capacity to Build: The Nonprofit as Affordable Housing Developer” and the new “Community Land Trust Certification Program.” In good company, other prominent speakers at the Housing Conference included Ken Lawson of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), a former Assistant HUD Director during the Clinton Administration, and a keynote from Freddie Mac.

Sheryl was joined at the conference by Damian Gregory who serves on the ROOF Miami-Dade Board of Trustees as well as the statewide Board of Directors for ROOF. Mary Smith and Lisa DiFranza from ROOF Clay Board of Trustees. ROOF Statewide Board member Rich Stevens of PNC and Kathy Hazelwood of Synovus attended in preparation for the formation of ROOF Orange County, which is currently seeking Board members.

No conference is complete without some fun and Sheryl was in on those antics as well. On the first day she won a gift pack from PNC Bank and on the second day she won a $1,000 check for ROOF…also from PNC! And an evening reception at the conference hotel afforded the ROOF team the opportunity to enjoy the company of the team from Legal Aid Service– Wendy and Callie. These amazing ladies work tirelessly with Sheryl on a variety of ROOF projects including real estate development, leasing issues, and more.

Sheryl and the statewide Board want to thank Synovus Bank and PNC Bank for sponsoring the conference registration of several of the ROOF advocates who attended. Sheryl and the rest of the team are already looking forward to attending next year’s conference, which will be held in Orlando in September 2020.
