Florida Symposium on Aging

On Friday, February 16th, 2016 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities (FCIC) will be hosting the Florida Symposium on Aging with Developmental Disabilities. The venue will be The Embassy Suites Hotel Tampa/USF, 3705 Spectrum Boulevard, Tampa, FL 33612.

This important day-long symposium will focus on the topic of aging with developmental disabilities. Using the delivery mechanisms of an expert panel of speakers, exhibitors and print media, FCIC will communicate to attendees how families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and other professionals may provide critical supports and resources that are needed to ensure continued quality of life in older adulthood.

FCIC’s goal is to offer attendees practical information and raise awareness of resources available to help professionals and family caregivers plan for challenges that may arise with the aging process for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Disability-related full-day conference with a terrific keynote, Tom D’Eri, from Rising Tide Car Wash in Parkland, FL.  Tom will share his family’s journey to successful social-business plan that arose from difficulty in his brother finding employment.  Andrew has Autism.  Rising Tide Car Wash was born from this journey, and is a successful business that is now franchising and growing.  The Rising Tide U offers assistance with developing business plans related to individuals with disabilities.

Along with this great keynote, the conference offers three subsequent breakout sessions, along four different “tracks”-Prek/Elementary, Teen/Transition, Adults/Aging and (new this year) Self-Advocacy.  Topics include such things as: Inclusive Preschool experience, Transportation options with JTA, mental health issues with the IDD population, Employment interviewing tips, Getting ready for the Special Education program/IEP process, Employment options for adults, and much more.

The Conference itself is free.  There is a charge for lunch (Publix Subs/Salad box lunch).  You are welcome to bring your own lunch as well.

Certificates of completion will be available after each session.

There will not be childcare available for this event.
